Can this boombastic Gregory Denali Pro pack be the one for you? Well let me ask you this…
What is the most critical thing when it comes to backpacking? The answer…
The backpack, of course!
If you came here to this review for the Gregory Denali Pro mountaineer backpack then you must know what it is you are looking for, just having a hard time maybe deciding which pack to buy.
Do you pack your backpack like this?
If you are looking for a durable yet enormous pack to take out in the woods or to run through uneven terrain, then look no further. I understand that volume isn’t an issue with this pack but neither is the comfort!
A rarity I know.
Wearing this pack you won’t experience sore shoulders or count how many times you have had to cinch up your hip-belt to keep the load from slipping down your body. Wearing these straps feels like you are on a couch and the shoulder straps do not cut into your skin.
And when I say durable, I mean straight heavy and strong 500d Cordura construction. (I would still pass this pack down to my son or daughter).
The hip straps aren’t the sexiest or the greatest looking but they darn well keep all that weight of your load on your hips. Same goes for the shoulder straps, they aren’t too thick or too thin.
I will say that this is not a super light backpack because it is made to carry heavy loads over long distances, which accounts for the care to comfort with a nice foam panel that sits easy and cozy on your back… whether you have a tank on or a thick jacket.
Whats cool is you could use the front pocket for a hydration bladder.. I used my 100L bladder and slapped it in there and it was perfect..
AND for all you avid outdoor photographers out three, you can also hold a camera tripod fits perfectly where skis are normally stored on the backpack.
Whether you want to trudge through the snowy winter carrying 70 plus pounds on your back, then this backpack is def for you! Packs of this quality are great for the winter, other crazy seasons for either two days to twenty.
Or for all you climbers out there!
Here is what fmajor said over at trailspace.com:
“The “technical” features are well thought out – dual axe loops make organizing easier and the tough crampon patch up top eases my worries about the damage that my crampons can cause. The HUGE front pocket has a mesh “wall” that unzips and gives access to the main compartment. The super tough sleeping bag compartment bottom has survived several scuffs and drags without showing any significant abrasion marks.
I have tried the EMS7000, Dana Designs, Lowe Alpine, Mountain Smith and a few others, but none even came close to the “off the shelf” fit of the Gregory. I like it so much I bought my fiancee’ the Gregory Petit Dru Pro 80 Mountaineering Pack – and she loves it too. Spend the money – you’ll not regret it.”
The top section of the backpack that flops over the main compartment and buckles down is referred to as the “brain.” So in conjunction with this pack, there are many organizational pockets for the perfectionist in you. I am know, like me, many of you love the zillion pockets and zippers that packs may have.. but for this one, there are only the brain, the front pocket and the main compartment itself.
I would be completely stoked if this pack had a side pocket to just that inner organizer in me to separate my gear a bit more. There also is a small opening for your sleeping bag so it will be a pain to get the your bag in and out.. so suck it up!
For our suggestion, we feel the Denali Pro to the serious adventurers, the outdoor type guides, rangers or forest workers, mountaineers and anyone who loves camping outdoors.
BUT if you are the type of person who loves to fill every suitcase, every fanny pack or, in this case, the Denali Pro… then look elsewhere. You will love the load hauling ability and durability of the Denali Pro for decades or longer. With the compression strap set up, I would say the Gregory Denali Pro is the most versatile backpack out there. For serious backpackers and Sherpa duties on up to medium rated rated world class mountaineering expeditions, this pack is as good as it gets.
So before you go questioning your sanity because of the price… just think comfort, durability, and long lasting for any TYPE of hauling or any TYPE of excursions with your Gregory Denali Pro.
